Class Listing

Class 1: Reference & Research Foundations

Begin by collecting valuable reference material using Pureref to build a visual mood board focused on key aspects of the creature's design—anatomy (skeleton/muscles), skin details (wrinkles, scales), and primary concept references. This class also covers researching and sourcing fossil skeletal scan data and setting up accurate scale within Maya.

Class 2: Skeleton Prep & T-Pose Setup

Learn to import and manage visual references using ZBrush's Spotlight reference tool. Masking techniques are used to repose STL scan data of a related Giganotosaurus species, establishing a functional T-pose skeleton mesh.

Class 3: Anatomical Blocking in ZBrush

Utilize the IMM Primitive brush in ZBrush to create a symmetrical anatomical block-out. This includes building up mass, defining surface volumes, and layering key muscle structures onto the T-pose skeleton.

Class 4: Concept Sculpt & Silhouette Pass

Refine the anatomical block-out using Dynamesh and ZBrush layers, adjusting balance and pose, including open/closed mouth variations. Sculpting brushes are introduced to produce a watertight mesh and block in primary shapes, with an emphasis on achieving a strong silhouette.

Class 5: Retopology for Production

Move into Maya’s modeling toolkit, using Quad Draw and primitive shapes to retopologise the concept sculpt. Alembic caches are used for scene optimization, while keylines and polycount are managed to create a clean, subdivision-ready mesh.

Class 6: UV Mapping & Eye Construction

Create symmetrical UVs using Maya’s UV Toolkit, carefully planning seam placement within a UDIM workflow suitable for hero creature assets. The class also includes the construction and UV layout of a 2-part eye build.

Class 7: Reprojection & Model Cleanup

Transfer sculpted detail from the Dynamesh concept sculpt onto the clean production mesh using ZBrush’s reprojection tools, morph targets, and layers. UVs are used to generate polygroups, enabling easier isolation of key areas for refinement.

Class 8: Secondary Forms & Wrinkle Mapping

Further refine the sculpt by introducing secondary forms, cleaning up anatomical features, and adding additional scale detail. Directional alphas are used to establish skin flow and generate a wrinkle map as a visual reference for the scale pass, followed by exporting the mesh for Mudbox.

Class 9: Skin Detailing in Mudbox

Import the high-resolution mesh into Mudbox to apply skin details using stencil tools and alpha maps. The sculpt is then brought back into ZBrush to combine detail layers and fine-tune intensity, preparing the model for map baking

Class 10: Asymmetry, Damage & Final Presentation

Introduce storytelling through asymmetry and damage passes to add character to the creature. Use partition workflows to break the mesh into subtools, increase resolution for displacement map baking, and configure bake settings. Finalise with quality checks and turntable renders in Maya, including final posing of the model.
