This course is the second part of our new V-Ray series, focusing on essential topics such as shaders and textures. In this course, you will first become familiar with the functionality of Hypershade in Maya. Then, you will dive deep into the primary V-Ray shader, VRayMtl, covering crucial aspects like diffuse color, reflection, refraction, coat, subsurface scattering, and more.

Following this stage, you will learn how to use nodes, combine them, load textures inside V-Ray for Maya, and create more complex shading networks using nodes such as color correction, bump, displacement, layered textures, and others. After mastering these concepts, we will create a highly realistic project to simulate lifelike materials. Finally, the course addresses the Image Sampler and color mapping in V-Ray, enabling us to complete the project that was set up with lights, cameras, clouds, and more in VRY103.

Class Listing

Class 1: Hypershade and VRayMtl, Part 1

Learn the basics of working with Hypershade. After setting up a simple scene, we focus on understanding basic parameters and reflection in VRayMtl. We also explore the important topic of fresnel to simulate various reflections using the Index of Refraction (IOR).

Class 2: VRayMtl, Part 2

You will start learning about the features of VRayMtl, focusing on refraction and translucency. These are crucial aspects that enable us to create materials allowing the passage of light, such as water, various glass types, different fruit juices, wax, and more. The importance of the model itself, its thickness, and the model's normal is also discussed.

Class 3: VrayMtl, Part 3

Important topics such as coat, sheen, reflection (advanced), refraction (advanced), and thin film are discussed. This enables us to simulate most of the physical properties of materials found in the real world using VRayMtl.

Class 4: Introduction to Texturing, Part 1

In the first part of the course covering texturing, we learn how to import textures into Hypershade. This allows us to control various aspects of a material, from surface color to behavior in calculating reflection and more. You will also become familiar with the color correction node and learn about the bump feature in VRayMtl.

Class 5: Introduction to Texturing, Part 2

You will learn how to control reflection and refraction using various nodes such as noise. Additionally, you will see how to simulate different types of anisotropy using the Ramp node.

Class 6: Kitchen Project, Part 1

We start the kitchen project by setting up the lighting for the scene using Image-Based Lighting. We choose the camera position and create one of the key materials for this scene, the jar glass material.

Class 7: Kitchen Project, Part 2

We create more kitchen materials such as butter, marble, jam, bread, the wall and more. We use nodes like V-Ray Layered Texture, V-Ray Color Correction, and other nodes. Additionally, we apply the displacement shader for some of the materials and finalize the project.

Class 8: Image Sampler

One of the most crucial topics in the rendering is the configuration of sampling and anti-aliasing settings. We begin learning about these concepts, examining the settings for the Progressive Image Sampler and the Bucket Image Sampler. We explore anti-aliasing and delve into the differences between various AA filters.

Class 9: Color Mapping

This class covers Color Mapping and Color Transformation, topics which are essential in all projects. It is crucial to understand the color space of textures and how V-Ray, alongside Maya, manages this important aspect to ensure correct rendering of textures in terms of color. In this lesson, we examine various methods of color mapping and explore the differences between them.

Class 10: Complex Shading Network

We create one of the most important shading networks for the final project of this course. Llearn how to control all of the textures created in Substance Painter or Quixel Mixer in V-Ray, enabling us to build a complex material.

Class 11: Final Project

The last class is related to the project we created in the VRY103 course. We've done the lighting, set up the camera, added details using Chaos Scatter, and now it's time to apply all of the materials. We finalize the with Maya and V-Ray using all the features we've learned.
