While tracking an object manually, use the axis’ vertical size to fit a particular feature of an object.
For example:
- Set the Z position of an axis so that it approximately fits the distance of the object to be tracked.
- Set the scale of the axis so that the height of the icon is the same as a feature in the image being tracked. (for example the total height of an object or some other reference).
- Use the z position of the axis to keep its size relative to the moving object.
- The result is “visually accurate” z position tracking for that object.
This process might require a few tries to make it work and I find that using motion paths helps the process quite a bit as it is possible to see the relationship of the object.
