Pulling a key on MiniDV

Instead of re-digitizing your footage through an analog connection why not try this…

1. Open Batch

2. Separate the channels of colour into Red, Green & Blue I used colour correct and wired:

R<-R, G<-R, B<-R for red

R<-G, G<-G, B<-G for green

R<-B, G<-B, B<-B for blue

3. Now that you have your channels separated you need to blur the green and blue channels. Why? well here’s the techy bit, so concentrate!

The number of components per channel of MiniDV is 4:1:1 this makes for very poor blue screen keying, normally we expect 4:2:2/4:4:4. By blurring the Green and Blue channels we can compensate for the component loss that occurs on miniDV that will lead to nasty edges when you try and pull a key.

4. Now that you have the channels separated simply recombine them in action and blur the Green and Blue channels in the horizontal plane by 4 pixels.

5. Hit process and fire up ultimatte!
