I got bored a while ago with my stable of standard podcasts and sources. There is nothing wrong with the normal set of podcasts on my ipod, but after a while… well you know. I had fallen into a trap of not having time to go off the beaten track and do some exploring – so I did.
Maybe you have some other great stuff you’d like to share? In which case I’d love to hear it but here is my criteria:
- professional or related to the industry
- not aimed at the college humour crowd.
- not stupid or involving cats
I wanted stuff that informed me and illuminated me on some area I did not know…
This is what I came up with…
Discussion of winning the next photographic job: Web
Ira Glass on story telling: video
Myths of Innovation: Video or Audio
Steve Martin on being a comic: Audio
3D animation Project Pigeon Impossible: Web site with videos
you hate cats?
If you haven’t checked out the TED Talks at http://www.ted.com, I highly recommend them. Not all of them are industry-related, but the E in “TED” does stand for “entertainment,” and they have had talks by J.J. Abrams and, this year, John Knoll (although Knoll’s talk is not yet online).
Still, if you want really stimulating, inspiring ideas, you definitely can’t go wrong soaking your brain in a big vat of TED.
hmm well informed or illuminated im not sure …. butl i like…

Hey Mike,
I think you might find this interesting – http://design.schoolofvisualarts.edu/weblog/guestlecture/
They are from last year, but still worth checking out. I’m hoping they start putting more up again.
Cheers,

One of the best TED presentations I’ve seen related to entertainment is the one by David Macaulay going through the process he went through to figure out how best to present his favorite things about Rome in a book. http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/david_macaulay_s_rome_antics.html
Some of my additions:
* Advanced Beauty – not exactly a podcast but a set of short mograph videos (which keep being published) inspired by music – http://is.gd/2zUe or advancedbeauty.org
* Indy Mogul – sometimes fun and most of the time quite useful stuff for DIY filmmakers – http://is.gd/2zUk or indymogul.com
* And you probably already know about FreshDV (http://is.gd/2zVd or freshdv.com) – I just love them for covering events like NAB
