Making virtual music

In a previous Background Fundamentals class here at fxphd, we showcased the work being done by Mod Productions on their ACO VIRTUAL experience, an event they presented on at SIGGRAPH Asia. ACO Virtual, made in conjunction with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, involves projections of 13 musicians that surround attendees on all sides, with sound coming from the direction of the player. But that’s not all – you can control the orchestra inside the installation, choosing to spotlight one musician or several.

We spoke to Mod’s Michela Ledwidge about how the performances were captured on greenscreen and how the installation was then developed. Find out more in our interview below:

ACO Virtual will next be showing at Manly Art Gallery & Museum (in Sydney) from 27 March to 3 May 2015.
